This hot chocolate mix recipe from chef Jason Hill is a decadent Valentine’s Day treat or winter drink. Hot cocoa is a hit for adults and children alike. Hot chocolate dates back to the Mayan period, when it was made with corn meal, chiles and water and was used for sacred ceremonies. Did this turn out way too chocolatey for anyone? I’m thinking of using 1/2 or 3/4 cup of chocolate chips next time. It was way too strong and thick, almost like a chocolate sauce. Maybe I did something wrong, though.

@shane472
It is very rich. You can cut back on the chips if you like.

Thanks, Jason.
When you make it is it pretty thick, though? I’m wondering if that’s because of all the chocolate or if I did something wrong that could’ve caused that.
Thanks!

@shane472
Sorry, I meant to type back OFF on the chips.
And you can cut the cream out and replace it with milk.

No, it just won’t be as rich. It all depends on how rich you want the drink. Let me know how it tastes with a lower-fat version. Cheers! Jason

I tried this and definitely agree with cutting the amount of chocolate chips by at least half. I’ve tried it with a whole cup, 2/3, half, and 1/3. A whole cup is just too much chocolate, like sickeningly chocolatey. For me, at least.
Anyway, I’d say somewhere between 1/3 cup and 1/2 cup is your sweet spot, 1/2 cup if you want it really rich(and I set out looking for the whole “melted candy bars” taste” in the first place. A whole cup was overkill, though.

It’s better with about half the chocolate if not 1/3, depending upon how rich you want it, but thanks for showing how to do the real stuff! If you were gonna add extracts, like peppermint or hazelnut, etc, would you add them the same as vanilla, 1 teaspoon?

If you were going for a hispanic style with this, and were going to add cinnamon and/or cayenne pepper/chili powder, when and in what quantities would you add them?
January 7th, 2010 at 4:09 am
@gasherthegrey Since this is a single serving, I’d add a dash of cayenne pepper and perhaps a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon, maybe even less of the cinnamon. Add it along with the chocolate chips. Let me know how it turns out for you. Cheers! Jason
